Sounding Activism: Native American Popular Music and the Occupation Of Alcatraz Island

The objective of this essay is to introduce you to the genre of American Indian popular music with specific attention to music around the occupation of Alcatraz Island by Indians of All Tribes.
For this essay, you will write a minimum of 250 words (approximately one double spaced page) for each of the following sections in chapter 4:
1.Pages 74-80 (Intro through Red Power Origin Stories)
2.Pages 80-90 (Native American Popular Musicians of the 1960s and 1970s)
For each of the sections listed above you will: a) summarize the major points/themes of the section; and b) personally reflect upon the experience of reading the chapter and these sections in particular. Was the information new to you? How does this information change your understanding of what Native American popular music can sound like? How does this information change your understanding of the area in which you live and the place you go to school considering that the 1969 occupation of Alcatraz Island was planned and carried out by SFSU students?
