It’s not possible to be both a great manager and a great leader

“It’s not possible to be both a great manager and a great leader.” Do you agree or disagree with this statement? Give some examples of managers and leaders from your experiences and why you defined them as such. In reality, I believe being successful on both levels requires an extraordinary person.

Your discussion group would love to hear about any of these special people you may have encountered. (no real names please unless they are a public figure).  Also, for this discussion you can give examples of politics in organizations. How do/did employees respond to these organizational politics? How, as a manager, will you handle political game playing within your organization, department or group?

What does it mean to suggest that yōkai are uncanny? Explore Freud’s concept of the uncanny and write about its value (or lack thereof?) for the study of Japanese yōkai. Freud’s essay can be found here.

For readings on the syllabus, brief, in-text citations are sufficient—e.g., (Bitō, Akō Incident, 52). For readings that aren’t on the syllabus, I’d like a full citation; in that case, a footnote or endnote might me more convenient.
