In addition to the two primary plot threads following Genly Ai and Therem Harth rem ir Estraven, Le Guin includes five Gethenian tales, short stories within the novel (Chapters 2, 4, 9, 12, and 17).  Yet, in the second paragraph of Chapter 1, Genly Ai tells us that “it is all one story.”  Evaluate his assertion and support or reject it. After that answer the questioins below: MLA FORMAT

What do we learn about Estraven in Chapters 2 and 9?

What other information about the foretelling does Chapter 4 foreshadow?

What do we learn about the Gethenian concept of time in 12?

What do we learn about shifgrethor in 17?

What is the quality of the answer that the Foretellers give?

What does the shadow of 17 symbolize?

On a separate piece of paper do the assingment below:

In her Introduction, Le Guin tells us that, in her novel, she is describing us:

Gethenian concept

Yes, indeed the people in it are androgynous, but that doesn’t mean that I’m predicting that in a millennium or so we will all be androgynous, or announcing that I think that we damned well ought to be androgynous.  I’m merely observing, in the peculiar, devious, and thought-experimental manner proper to science fiction, that if you look at us at certain odd times of day in certain weathers, we already are. . . .  I am describing certain aspects of psychological reality in the novelist’s way, which is by inventing elaborately circumstantial lies.

Examine the lies she tells to determine what METAPHORICAL times of days and which METAPHORICAL weathers she is talking about.  In what ways is she claiming humans are androgynous?

Understand that metaphorical means NON-literal, so she is not talking about time by the clock or weather in the sky.  Weather, in this comparison (metaphor) is circumstances we find ourselves in, such as work/careers, parenthood, interpersonal relationships, and so forth. Times would be specific situations in those contexts.  She is saying that, in certain situations and circumstances, our genders do not matter:  we (re)act as humans, not as men or women.

Gethenian concept

You job is to identify what those situations and circumstances might be by identifying parallels in the lives of the people of Gethen.  Name them, and show the parallels. The essay asks you to do either one of two things:

1)       Look for examples of things the Gethenians do which are like the parenthood illustration I used above to prove that she is correct, that there are times when OUR genders don’t matter.  She puts these (re)actions into the form of the androgynous Gethenians to tell a good story, but she is really talking about us.

“Lies” = metaphor.  A metaphor is a comparison (study of SIMILARITIES) between UNLIKE (= DIFFERENT) things.  Its purpose is illustration.  For example, I once heard a student say, “Kissing him was like eating a bowl of spaghetti.”  Literally, this statement is a Lie, but it nevertheless describes and explains what that kiss was like in a short, easy-to-grasp manner.  We are not left in any doubt that she was NOT impressed.

Think of a Time  (in LeGuin’s metaphor) as a specific instance and Weather as general conditions.  It’s sort of like 3 pm on a Rainy afternoon:  the Time is a specific instance, and the general condition is rainy.

Let’s apply that to her theme of psychological reality that tells us that we are sometimes neither male nor female but simply human.

The weather/situation is Parenthood.  The time/instance is an infant crying.  According to LeGuin, the response will be for the parent to go to the infant and try to comfort it.  This response is not linked to male or female:  it’s simply what a human parent would do.

Her Introduction says that she believes there are many such times/weathers when our genders are irrelevant, that we are simply human, not male or female, in our actions/responses.

In order to talk about this conclusion, she could have written a psychology textbook about our common human nature, using all literal facts and figures, OR she could have written a novel, which uses Lies—metaphors in the form of people who are androgynous physically—to illustrate our common human nature.  Being a novelist, she naturally chose to write the novel and fill it examples like the one I used above but set on this other world with androgynous humans living there.

This essay will require analysis.  Don’t bother retelling the story:  your readers have read it.  Instead, take the story apart to see how the pieces interact.  Show us cause-and-effect relationships, the causes being the elements, the effects being the readers’ reactions, and the relationships being the means by which the reactions were evoked.  Identify the general effect in a Thesis Statement (or Statement of the Controlling Idea).

Creative Writing Prompts – Unlock The Creative Writing Kingdom Within You Using Writing Prompts

Creative Writing Prompts are a fantastic way to give new life to your writing when you’re feeling stuck, blocked, or just tired of how you seem to be writing the same old words, sentences and paragraphs.

We all go through lulls in our writing. The danger is when we let this minor and entirely natural little dip in our creativity turn into a black hole where we’re completely in the grip of writer’s block and can barely put a handful of words together.

One of the major reasons why we don’t use writing prompts is the fear that we’re cheating somehow or taking a creative short cut.

Rather than relying on our own creativity, we feel we’re using the creative talent of the person who came up with the prompt.

Here’s why this fear is unfounded:

Imagine you lived in a town just outside a vast and mighty kingdom. All around that kingdom is a 10 metre high wall to stop people seeing in. You hear rumours and whispers about how wonderful life is for those inside the kingdom, but you can’t find a way in. You see there are huge gates at different points around the perimeter wall but they’re locked and bolted, there’s no way through.

This kingdom is like the creative writing talent within you.

It’s already there, waiting to be explored and discovered, but you can’t find a way in. You can’t work out how to unlock that writing talent.

Now imagine one day you’re stood at one of these awesome gates to the kingdom, desperate to find a way in, and a woman comes over to you and presents you with a key, before vanishing again as quickly as she appeared. You put the key in the lock of the gate, turn it, and you’re in. Welcome to the kingdom! And yes it’s every bit as glorious as you hoped it would be.

Creative writing prompts themselves are NOT the kingdom of wonderful creative writing within you. Creative writing prompts are the KEYS to the kingdom.

Using a simple writing prompt can provide you with the first step you need to set off on incredible writing adventures. It doesn’t matter who the woman with the key was, it only matters that you took the key and entered the kingdom.

It doesn’t matter who created the writing prompt you decide to use. It only matters that you chose to you use it, and that it helped you start writing in a direction or a style or using a technique you wouldn’t have found on your own.

Accept the keys to the wonderful creative writing kingdom within you today by using creative writing prompts.

The Advantages to Using the APA Format

Writers often are required to use one out of several different formats when writing a paper. For the behavioral and social sciences as well as in education, the APA format is the preferred choice. This format was created by the American Psychological Association in 1929 to establish rules in structuring a paper that will enable ease of reading for both publishers and readers. There are several advantages to using this format in your paper.

The APA format is widely used in many fields of academia. By using the APA format in your paper, you are less likely to have to restructure your paper upon submittal to your professor, the journal’s editor, or a publisher. It also means that it is not necessary for you to learn many formats when writing about different topics. The APA format also gives structure and order in your paper, making it more professional and formal. It also lends credibility to the paper because many readers, particularly in the scientific fields, are accustomed to reading works in this format. And those that fail to comply are sometimes met with doubt and shock.

Another advantage to using the APA style is that it leaves you no room to wonder about how the contents should be structured. The rules set within this format detail the size of the margins, the spacing required, and even what font should be used. It also gives the writer instructions on how sources should be cited within the body paragraphs and in the references section. Page numbers, headings, and even abbreviations also are discussed in the APA Format’s manual. Knowing how to structure your paper will enable you to focus more on your content.

Using the APA format also allows the writer to further develop his or her writing skills. While many are aware that the format has set rules for structuring a paper, it also discusses the ins and outs of grammar that will help any writer. In addition, it also helps develop a person’s critical thinking skills. It promotes unbiased writing and asks writers to ensure that their paper has a neutral perspective. This includes avoiding the use of gender pronouns and making sure that there is no bias contained in any of the text.

Writers are also able to use images in their paper with the APA style. The guidelines include how writers can insert and use charts, tables, and graphs in their paper for ease of reading the data and in understanding it as well. While the written text can be a powerful thing, images enable readers to quickly grasp the concepts presented in the paper, particularly in the scientific fields where a huge amount of numbers may be required in presenting data.

The last, but certainly not the least, advantage that one has when using the APA format is the presence of numerous materials that will help writers in learning and using the format. The APA manual can easily be referenced through the APA website, which also has several tutorials and examples for writers. Because of its pervasive use, there are also numerous other sources of information that can be found online about how to use this format. While it can certainly be challenging to use at first, the popularity of the format helps writers find it easier to learn with so many guides to choose from.
