What effect does acid rain have on the environment?



Acid rain is precisely refers to rain water whose pH level is below 5.6. Acid rain has become a huge environmental problem especially due to the adverse effects it has on the environment. The effects of acid rain are not only experienced on human beings but also on plants, animals and also other man-made features. Acid rain is a form of pollution that is not only caused by industrial factors but also domestic factors. In this paper, we shall focus on what effects acid rain has on the environment.

What effect does acid rain have on the environment?

Acid rain is known to have very adverse effects on the surroundings. One effect is that it alters the pH concentration of the soil leading to acidification of the soil (Madhoolika, 2008)making it very difficult to engage in agricultural activities. Plants cannot thrive on extremely low pH concentration levels hence retarded growth and eventual withering of the plants and crops.

Acid rain also tends to cause corrosion on some man-made features such as bridges, cars and buildings. The corrosion effect is brought about by the acidic nature of the rain water which brings about corrosion of all items exposed to it (Madhoolika, 2008). As the corrosion effect persists for long, buildings and bridges end up collapsing due to gradual weakening.

Acid rain also has negative effects on aquatic habitats. Acid rain water run-off ends up in rivers and lakes where the acidity increases leading to a decline in the number of water animals, fish and other aquatic plants. Some of the young fish may experience body deformation due to the acidic water.
