Commercialization and Co-option of Religion

In lieu of meeting on November 21 (the Tuesday of Thanksgiving week), you’ll complete an online Module. This will also help you to fulfill the requirements for your third paper. Please complete the following activities, in the following order:

1. Watch this video on Ayahuasca tourism: (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site.

2. Read these 2 articles on Ayahuasca tourism:

a. (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site.

b. (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site.

3. Watch this video titled “White Shamans and Plastic Medicine Men”: (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site.

Then, write a two to three page paper, double-spaced. Don’t use ginormous margins or font to make it appear that your paper is longer than it actually is. You should proofread before you submit it, or have someone proofread it for you. Your paper should be free of misspellings, incomplete sentences, and incorrect grammar. Using proper writing techniques saves me from having to guess at what you meant and saves you from losing points.  Do not use ANY quotes in your paper; all information should be restated in your own words. You do not need to use outside sources for this paper, but if you want to find and use other sources to support your position, that’s fine to do so. Please include a list of citations at the end of your paper if you use sources other than the four resources (2 articles and 2 videos). Those are provided.

Here is your Paper Topic:

Having watched the video and read the articles on Ayahuasca tourism, and then having watched the “White Shamans” video on Native American perspectives on cultural co-option  (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site.of religion, please discuss what you learned from these videos and papers regarding the sharing of religion by Native cultures of the Americas with Euro-Americans. Some possible topics to reflect on:  What do Euro-Americans think about using Native American religions and why might they think that? What do Native Americans think about this use of their religions and why might they think that? Do all Native Americans think the same way about the uses of their religious practices by non-Natives? Is there something in particular about Euro-American culture that leads people to adopt other religions (based on what’s discussed in the resources, or based on your own thoughts)? Who benefits from this cultural sharing of religious ideas and practices? Does either (or both) culture suffer harm from this sharing of religion? What do you personally think about these practices such as “white shamanism” and ayahuasca tourism? In your paper, you should be sure to reference the videos and articles you watched and read for this topic, to show that you watched and read them!
