WHAT IS A PHOTO ESSAY?A photo essay is an essay or a short article that consists of text and numerous photographic images. For this course, you are expected to create a photo essay that analyzes Whiteness and White Supremacy at Seattle University. This assignment is intended for you to apply much of what you have learned, in this class, as you assess how Whiteness and White Supremacy manifest here at Seattle University. Further, this assignment allows you demonstrate your ability to analyze how you see, or how you experienced, or how you witnessed Whiteness and White Supremacy at Seattle University. Finally, this assignment is your opportunity to tell a “story” through a combination of words & images.
REQUIRED SECTIONS of PHOTO ESSAY
Your photo essay will be comprised of the following sections:
1. INTRODUCTION: Your “Introduction” will provide an overview of your photo essay.
a. Your Introduction will grab the reader’s attention by illustrating the importance of this topic.
b. Your Introduction will offer a brief overview of what your essay will cover.
c. NOTE: You will not include any photos in the introduction.
2. MY RACIAL STANDPOINT: “My Racial Standpoint” is the second section of your essay.
a. This section will introduce the reader to who you are – racially.
b. This section will discuss how you see yourself, given your race, at Seattle University.
c. This section will discuss where you see yourself belonging or not belonging at Seattle University.
d. This section will discuss how you feel at Seattle University – given your race.
e. NOTE: You will embed images, in this section, to illustrate your key points.
f. NOTE: When appropriate, you should draw from course materials to support your key points.
3. WHITENESS at SEATTLE UNIVERISTY: “Whiteness at Seattle University” is the third section of your essay.
a. This section will offer a brief definition of the concept “Whiteness.”
b. This section will provide at least four examples of how you see Whiteness manifesting at SU.
c. This section will include an analysis of these manifestations. Your analysis will require you to borrow
supporting evidence from the course material. You must cite your sources.
d. NOTE: You will embed images, in this section, to illustrate your key points.
4. WHITE SUPREMACY at SEATTLE UNIVERISTY: “White Supremacy at Seattle University” is the fourth section of your
essay.
a. This section will offer a brief definition of the concept “White Supremacy.”
b. This section will provide at least four examples of how you see White Supremacy manifesting at SU.
c. This section will include an analysis of these manifestations. Your analysis will require you to borrow
supporting evidence from the course material. You must cite your sources.
d. NOTE: You will embed images, in this section, to illustrate your key points.
5. ANTI-RACISM at SEATTLE UNIVERISTY: “Anti-Racism at Seattle University” is the fifth section of your essay.
a. This section will offer a brief definition of the concept “Anti-Racism.”
b. This section will provide at least four examples of what an anti-racist Seattle University would look like. This
section will include an analysis of these manifestations. Your analysis will require you to borrow supporting
evidence from the course material. You must cite your sources.
c. NOTE: You will embed images, in this section, to illustrate your key points.
6. CONCLUSION: The “Conclusion” is the final section of your paper.
a. This section will summarize what was discussed in your paper.
b. This section will offer your final thoughts about why an “anti-racist” Seattle University is worthwhile.
