Order Description
Pauline Hopkins explicitly describes the creation of art promoting or at least describing interracial romance as deeply necessary. She writes emphatically, “white people don’t understand what pleases Negroes.” Using the works “Talma Gordon,” Hopkins’ reply to Cordelia Condict, Chesnutt’s “The Wife of His Youth,” and Johnson’s Autobiography of an Ex-Colored Man as your sources, identify the problem of depicting black and white romance and the specific problem of the “mulatto” character. Is there a difference between the writers who publish closer to the 1890s, like Hopkins and Chesnutt, and the modernism of James Weldon Johnson?
