Lincolns war policy

For this assignment, you will write two letters: one from the perspective of a Texan in favor of secession; and the other from the perspective of a Northerner in support of Lincoln’s war policy. Each letter should be about one page in length (no more than two), and should reflect your understanding of the primary sources we’ve read and discussed in class. YOU MUST INCORPORATE THE SOURCES WE HAVE READ IN CLASS INTO YOUR LETTERS.

Prompt:

Letter 1: Texas has just left the Union. You are caught up in the fervor of secession, and you are writing to a cousin in England explaining Texas’ position. Consider WHY Texas left the Union, and what you are fighting to preserve, etc. You must incorporate primary sources into your letter.

Letter 2: It is the Fall of 1862 and the war is under way. You are a Northerner in support of Lincoln and his policy to keep the Union intact. You are writing to a cousin in England to keep them apprised of the situation in America. Consider what is significant about the summer/fall of 1862 regarding the war in your discussion of Lincoln’s war policy. You must incorporate primary sources into your letter.

Since this is a creative assignment, no citations are necessary. Feel free to use regional dialect and language of the era, but no racial slurs please. Use of any offensive term will result in an automatic zero on the assignment. Have fun and be creative!
