SAI Group is all set to declare open the 11th edition of the ‘Open Essay Writing and Poster Making Competition 2014’, focusing on the theme, ‘Spreading the Light through Human Values’. Around 4,000 students from more than 250 schools across the length and breadth of Oman are expected to participate. This nationwide competition is organised in co-operation with the ministry of education. The objective of this event is to help the students walk the path of human values and reflect human excellence in their journey. Phase 1 of the competition will be held at Indian School Al Ghubra on April 12 from 10 am to 12 noon for Omani Arabic, Private (monolingual, bilingual and global), International and Special Education Schools of Muscat Governorate. Ali bin Humaid al Jahwary, DG, Directorate-General of Education, Muscat Region, will inaugurate the competition on April 12 at Indian School, Al Ghubra at 9.45 am. Officials from MoE, heads of many institutions, judges for the competitions and a host of invitees are expected to attend.

Each year, it has been a great sight to see children of different nationalities congregating in one place, sitting together and splashing out their creative thoughts on human value themes in the form of essays and colourful posters. Alternatively, they can contact SAI group for despatch of hall tickets through email. Participants must carry their hall tickets that contain the roll number, room number, and also their writing/colour pencils/drawing material. Only foolscap ruled papers for essay-writing and A3 sheets for poster-making would be provided by the organisers. Students need to fill in the roll number and to tick the appropriate topic box and not write their names or school names in the answer papers. Participants are advised not to carry cell phones, iPads and other similar gadgets to the competition area. The second phase of the event will be held on April 19 at Sohar, Sur and Nizwa and third and final phase on April 26 at Salalah and Buraimi at the Indian schools at the respective places.

There are two reasons: either the person posting the spam is some poor non-native English speaker who is being paid to post this; or, it is the result of a bot trying to bypass the spam filters. Ironically, spelling ‘mistakes’ actually make it easier to disguise a spam message. I think a god editor could greatly improve the clarity of a draft without knowing what all the big words meant. But the scientist/student would still need to go back through it to check that the science was OK. That article got me pondering the ethics of hiring a grant writer/editor. I’ve got a Ph. D. and now I work professionally as a science editor and consultant. Based on most of the papers I work on, the scientific publishing universe would be a very different place without editors, volunteer or otherwise. I’m getting approached by more and more people to write their grants, but I always decline.

I’m sure the money’s good, but would I trust someone else to get my funding? Plus, I didn’t drop out of science to write other people’s grants! Speaking from the point of view of a fresh grad student, even though I know writing articles/grants/dissertations is not a fun job, but why would you want to forgo the exercise? A friend of mine is a freelance writer, including writing for medical journals where she is given all the data and results, and writes the entire paper from that. 12:28:00: I can report that in business disciplines shadow writing does not actually work well either – contrary to your apparent opinion we do actually do original research. Refer to journals such as Econometrica, Journal of Finance and you will see plenty of terminology. It would reflect better if you did not descend to slagging off other disciplines. And following from yesterdays blogs we would all love to have only ‘weeks’ to ‘months’ from submission to final publications, try rather years to get through the rigorous refereeing process.
